Old Fashioned Cough Syrup Recipe to Get Rid of That Pesky Cough

Are you tired of over-the-counter cough syrups with ingredients you can't even pronounce? Why not try making your own old fashioned cough syrup at home using natural ingredients like peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm, hibiscus and marshmallow root? Not only is it easy to make, but it's also a soothing and effective remedy for those pesky coughs.

What You'll Need:

To make this homemade cough syrup, you'll need the following ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup dried peppermint leaves
  • 1/4 cup dried spearmint leaves
  • 1/4 cup dried lemon balm leaves
  • 1/4 cup dried hibiscus flowers
  • 1/4 cup dried marshmallow root
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup pure Vermont maple syrup (or honey)

How to Make It:

1. In a saucepan, combine the peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm, hibiscus, marshmallow root and water.

2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes.

3. Remove the saucepan from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.

4. Strain the liquid into a bowl, pressing on the herbs to extract all the liquid.

5. Add the maple syrup to the liquid and stir until well combined.

6. Pour the cough syrup into a clean glass jar and store it in the refrigerator.

How to Use It:

Take 1-2 teaspoons of the homemade cough syrup as needed to soothe a cough or sore throat. Shake well before each use, as the maple syrup may settle at the bottom of the jar.

This natural remedy is generally safe for both children and adults and it tastes great too!

Next time you feel a cough coming on, skip the store-bought cough syrup and try this homemade old fashioned remedy instead. Your body will thank you for choosing natural ingredients to help you feel better!
